If you are a student, try TravelCuts. They are non-profit and can get special deals for students. I am also on the west coast and my family lives in Alberta. I can get some pretty sweet deals through them. TravelCuts also works for non-students, but you can get extra discounts if you are in school.
Also, be wary of ‘discount’ places you see in the mall. . . . they don’t tell you that those flights they advertise include 100’s of dollars in taxes, airport fees, national security fees. . . blah blah blah. . . .
